Sword Art Online It's a anime Parody best Storyline
The best storyline of the divisive anime Sword Art Online is surprisingly a parody of the series rather than from the official show. Sword Art Online is a series based on light novels by Reki Kawahara that has been running strong for a decade now. The series drew attention with its first season which explored VR gamers trapped inside an MMORPG called Sword Art Online. They're unable to log out, and if they die in the game, their physical body dies as well. It was a unique arc that ran its course and ended after twelve episodes...but the anime itself never stopped.
Sword Art Online continued to follow the characters outside the Anime
In numerous storylines over the years in new seasons, video games, and even movies with a new Sword Art Online film recently announced to be in the works. Because of the series' lengthy storylines that continue long after the base premise had ended, fans have argued that the show's writing has taken a massive hit as far back as the first season following the escape from the killer game. Characters like Kirito and Asuna who were loved before were now being critiqued as fans began to see flaws that were in the first arc from the beginning. Since then, Sword Art Online's writing and characters have become infamous among anime fans, but an Abridged series actually managed to take what didn't work and made the show even better.
YouTube entertainer Something Witty Entertainment began sharing a new series in 2013 called Sword Art Online Abridged that took episodes from the aforementioned anime and spoofed them with clever jokes and new versions of the iconic characters. What's hilarious though is that this version of the anime actually has a better storyline than the source material. By far the biggest change between the original show and the parody is Kirito, who's depicted in these videos as a narcissistic sociopath. While Kirito in the original show certainly kept to himself, this version of the character hilariously wears his ego with pride as he relentlessly mocks other players in the game. His arc is even subverted as a character as he's shown to be a character that has moments when it looks like he'll change but immediately reverts to his awful self. Take a look at the series' second episode featuring Kirito at his best here!
What's even better about the anime Abridged parody is the relationship between Asuna and Kirito
Is far more interesting. The original romance was incredibly milquetoast because the chemistry between the two was fairly average. Nothing really stood out from it aside from a decently heartbreaking moment near the end of the show's first arc when Asuna sacrifices herself. Abridged takes the relationship between them in a different direction though by doubling down on how much the two hate each other. They're consistently angry at each other and trying to one-up the other with insults. While Asuna is frustrated with Kirito only looking out for himself, Kirito gets annoyed by Asuna's empathy for others because he's a lone wolf. It makes for hysterical interactions between the two as they let their quirks shine.
Currently, Something Witty Entertainment has released 16 episodes of Sword Art Online Abridged with more on the way. They have also begun making Abridged parodies of My Hero Academia for fans of the hit superhero series to check out if they loved their previous spoof. Sword Art Online is certainly a series that has divided anime fans everywhere, but the fact that people who love and hate the series have agreed that the parody is even better than the original says a lot about its quality and makes it an absolute must-watch.
